Liberal candidate for Corangamite Darcy Dunstan and City of Greater Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj arrived at their press conference on bikes to announce the commitment, which would help deliver a separated bike lane along Horseshoe Bend Road from South Beach Road in Torquay to Warralily Boulevard in Armstrong Creek.
“I’ve heard from lots of people who cycle along Horseshoe Bend Road that this stretch of road can be dangerous for even the most experienced riders,” Mr Dunstan said.
“This investment will provide a dedicated, separated bike lane along Horseshoe Bend Road all the way from South Beach Road in Torquay to Warralily Boulevard in Armstrong Creek.”
The project aligns with ongoing work by Surf Coast Shire and the City of Greater Geelong to improve active transport links between the two growth areas.
In May 2024, this masthead reported that both councils had received $30,000 through the Transport Accident Commission’s Local Government Grant Program to investigate options for a safer cycling route.
That study focused on off-road alternatives to the Surf Coast Highway, which is considered hazardous for cyclists.
Former Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said at the time the project would provide a key connection between communities and encourage active transport.
“At a time when all governments are trying to promote active transport, have fitter, healthier communities, it’s a really key priority for us and we would like to see it come to fruition,” he said.
The City of Greater Geelong’s project website states that community engagement closed on February 3, and the project is due to be finalised by May 2025.
