Lighthouse Classic shines a light on great cause
MORE than 200 people turned out to shine a light on cancer at the fourth Lighthouse Classic group fundraising event.
Participants enjoyed a mix of beach and clifftop walking from Urquhart Bluff to the Aireys Inlet Lighthouse and back to raise funds for cancer research at the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI).
Sunday’s event paid tribute to Lighthouse Classic founder Janet Jones OAM, who bravely fought cancer for over 33 years before her passing in 2021.
Janet’s son and event coordinator Harry Jones said the community support for the event was “very touching”.
“It was just a great morning connecting with friends, family and the wider community while fundraising for an important cause,” he said.
“We had a mix of runners and walkers doing the event and it was the perfect conditions for both to thrive.
“Every participant touched the lighthouse when they arrived at the lighthouse in honour of someone, they know who has been affected by cancer.
“We thank everyone for coming along and our family is thrilled to have had your support.”
Throughout the month of January, others will be choosing their own route to shine a light on cancer.
Participants will complete the Lighthouse Classic in Manly, Rottnest Island and as far away as India, the United States and United Arab Emirates.
With just over a fortnight to go, the fundraising proponent of the event has ticked over $28,500.
The Lighthouse Classic has now donated over $150,000 to cancer research since its inception.
