Lighthouse Classic to shine a light on those touched by cancer
ENTRIES are now open for the 2025 Lighthouse Classic, with the goal of raising $25,000 for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI).
The January 5 event will see members of the community walk or run a 12km course from Urquhart Bluff to the Aireys Inlet Lighthouse to shine a light on cancer.
The fifth annual fundraiser will pay tribute to founder Janet Jones OAM, who was a board member of FECRI before her passing in 2021.
Her son Harry, daughters Lucy and Felicity and husband Peter will be leading the charge in her honour in 2025.
“We are super-excited for next year’s event and aim to have over 1,000 walkers either attending on the day or walking for the cause during January,” Harry said.
“Once again we are so honoured to be walking for Mum again this year, and to raise awareness and funds for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute,” Felicity added.
“If we can top what we’ve done in previous years would be terrific. It’ll be exciting to bring people to the event who haven’t done it before, and to see the same friendly faces.”
If walkers can’t make it on January 5, they are encouraged to walk and touch a lighthouse if they can throughout the month of January.
“While this walk on the Surf Coast was mum’s favourite, we encourage everyone to get behind the event whether its on this track, or elsewhere,” Lucy said.
“Last year people took part abroad and over at Ocean Grove and in Point Lonsdale where groups touched the lighthouse there.”
“So many people are touched by cancer. We will obviously touch it for Mum, but we invite others to touch it for others who have been or are sick,” Felicity added.
Since its inception, the Lighthouse Classic has raised more than $150,000 to help fund a cancer research scientist at the world class research centre in Ballarat.
FECRI is Australia’s only regionally based cancer research centre, which aims to help patients with a broad range of cancers.
Each registration comes with a limited edition Lighthouse Classic cap.
