Local businesses step up to help with cost of living
IN A HEARTWARMING show of community spirit, businesses in the region are stepping up to help residents cope with the rising cost of living.
Among them are London Look Studio and Samesyn Restaurant, with both Torquay businesses offering free services to those in need.
JoJo, a local stylist who owns London Look Studio, understands the impact of a fresh haircut on one’s well-being.
“A lot of people are doing it quite hard at the moment,” she said.
“I know how important it is for people when they get their hair cut, how it makes them feel. If someone is struggling or knows someone who is, I’m happy to give them a haircut because I know how much it makes people happy.”
JoJo has been offering a few free haircuts each week to those in need.
“Torquay is a really lovely community,” she said.
“We come together and work out strategies to help each other out. It’s not just me; there are many of us out there trying to support each other.”
Graham Jefferies, the co-owner of Samesyn Restaurant, has also joined the effort by offering free meals to those struggling to make ends meet.
“We’ve set up as a profit-for-purpose enterprise, and one of our biggest goals is to serve the community,” he said.
“We know there are people who might not be able to afford a nice meal out because of the cost of living and mortgages.”
Samesyn Restaurant has already provided several free dinners and has more planned.
“We’ve had four dinners already and have another five booked in,” Mr Jefferies said.
“People come to us for various reasons, including issues at home, mental health, or just needing a night out. We don’t judge; we just want to offer a bit of joy.”
He said it was important to support the community during tough times.
“We try to offer a full experience, not just a meal.
“Guests get a nine-dish tasting menu with wine. It’s about bringing a smile to their faces, whether they’re struggling financially or just need a break.”
Both JoJo and Jefferies highlighted the importance of community support in these challenging times. “There’s a lot of us in the community thinking of ways to help each other out,” JoJo said.
Graham agreed, saying “We believe in using what we do to benefit others and create a supportive environment.”
