CHILDREN from the Surf Coast will be able to get access to better care closer to home thanks to funding from the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The hospital’s recent investment of $8.5 million over three years will support more than 30 health services across Victoria’s regional areas, including Barwon Health.

The funding will allow the local health provider to boost its equipment for neonatal care and pediatric sleep studies, as well as enhance service provision.

The Surf Coast has raised more than $13,000 so far for the Good Friday Appeal (GFA), which wraps up in a few weeks’ time.

Local GFA volunteer area manager Peter McMahon said every dollar raised helped make this life-changing work possible.

“Anything that reduces the stress of travel and improves care experiences for regional families, makes our fundraising efforts well worthwhile.

“To continue this, we need to raise much, much more.”

Barwon Health chief executive officer Frances Diver agreed. “The Good Friday Appeal is a powerful reminder that, by working together, we can help ensure families and children in our region have access to the highest standard of clinical care,” she said.

“Critical upgrades in both clinical equipment and workforce training elevate care for children and young people across the Barwon South West region.”

Local fundraising will support advanced education access and expert-led training and enable the purchase of items such as neonatal cots, jaundice screening devices and portable pain relief machines.

McMahon encouraged everybody in the Surf Coast region to donate to collection cans wherever they are during this month, or to donate through the website.

“This year, we celebrate 95 years of community generosity, and we encourage as many people as possible to contribute to the Good Friday Appeal,” he said.

“This will ensure the further strengthening of paediatric services in this region as the RCH spreads its excellence through health services throughout Victoria.”
