Local children’s author releases new book

May 6, 2021 BY

LOCAL author Sally Learey has captured the essence of Geelong’s culture and community in a delightful new children’s picture book.

Corio Bay Quest is Ms Learey’s second Geelong picture book and features the same fictional family from her first Geelong title Corio Bay Kingdom.

“After I wrote the first book, I realised there was a whole lot more I wanted to say,” Ms Learey says.

“The family that I wrote about in Corio Bay Kingdom were so well loved that I decided that they would feature in this story too.”

The book is not a sequel but Ms Learey says that anyone who’s read Corio Bay Kingdom will recognise the characters.

After the first book, Ms Learey says a lot of people who manage attractions around Geelong said “why aren’t we in your book?’.”

Ms Learey then drafted the second book in 2009 but filed it away in her cabinet for a later date.

“I felt it was opportune a few months ago to get this book out there and to bring a bit of joy to people and to get people out and about and connecting with local culture and community in Geelong again,” Ms Learey said.

Corio Bay Quest encourages families to experience Geelong and, what’s more, 90 per cent of the attractions and experiences mentioned in the book are free.

The book is also filled with vibrant watercolor illustrations showcasing Geelong landmarks.

The illustrations are Ms Learey’s “mental creation” but drawn by Stuart Craven.

An exhibition of the original artwork from both books is being held at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre from May 3 to 15.

Corio Bay Quest will be launched at the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre on May 11 from 10am-11am.

Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher will be speaking and registration is essential.

The book is published by Sandcastle Press and available in all good bookshops.
