Local clubs commit to Pride Round
ANGLESEA Football Club player and premiership-winning captain Madeleine Slingo says she is excited to run onto West Oval alongside Geelong West this Sunday under the banner of inclusion.
More local sporting clubs than ever across the region will don a splash of colour on their uniforms to help spread the message of inclusivity as part of AFL Barwon’s Pride Round from June 8-11.
“It’s terrific to see the whole competition really getting behind it this year,” Slingo said.
“Last year to have the Pride Round under lights, supported by the Surf Coast Shire, with a different guernsey and a different cup had a really fun vibe to it.
“The team we played against last year, North Geelong, ran out with us under one banner and to have that down on the Surf Coast with our community behind us provided a really good energy on the day.”
The Roos head to West Oval this Sunday, June 11 to take on Geelong West in this year’s fixture in AFL Barwon’s Division 2 competition.
Other clubs to have new colour-themed design uniforms for this weekend include Geelong Amateur, Geelong West, Newtown & Chilwell, South Barwon, St Mary’s, and Drysdale.
AFL Barwon regional manager Edward Wilson said his organisation was proud to lead the Pride Round across its football and netball competitions and leagues this coming weekend.
“We’re incredibly proud of everyone who makes up our local community and strives to provide support and integrated equitable opportunities, for all.
“Pride Round supports this vision significantly and we’re proud to work with clubs, partners and stakeholders locally, who support our diversity and inclusion values and objectives.”
Pride Round is one of six AFL Barwon community-themed rounds in 2023.
