FRESHWATER Creek CFA will be represented for the first time ever at Saturday’s (September 6) Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb.

Two members of the small but mighty team — Simon Parkinson and Steph McCallum — will ascend a gruelling 28 floors of the Crown Metropol to raise vital funds for cancer research and crisis support.

Climbers will carry up to 25kg of turnout gear and breathing apparatus, a symbol of the significant health and wellbeing burden faced by first responders and their families on a daily basis.

Mr Parkinson said he’s been in training for two months in anticipation for the event.

“Everything is coming together really well… I’ve been in the gym on the stair climb and I also work in high-rise construction, so I’ve got access to the 40 floors of stairs there.

“My brother has been involved for a few years, and he’s been encouraging me to do it for a long time. I’m stoked we are going to be able to make it a family occasion this year.

“The pair of us are really proud that we are the first ones from Freshwater Creek CFA to be completing the challenge.”

Preparations have looked different for Ms McCallum, however, after last minute surgery left her unable to do much training.

“I’ve just recovered and am just starting to get into my training now.

“I’m climbing stairs, doing squats and just doing everything I can to get strength back in my knees.”

It is her own experience with PTSD that has inspired her to take on the challenge for the first time.

“PTSD really hits home for me… I’ve got it, so I really wanted to raise money to support what are some really good causes.”

The pair has already raised more than $2,000, with all proceeds to be split between the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation, Lifeline and 000 Foundation.

“We are both at over $1,000 and it’s fantastic everyone has just chipped in to help,” Mr Parkinson said.

Ms McCallum said she was proud to have already surpassed her fundraising goal.

“Hopefully we get a few more last-minute donations,” she said.
