Local groups lead the way in state sustainability awards

A HOST of Surf Coast, Bellarine and Geelong organisations have been commended for their grassroots environment initiatives with nomination in Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria’s sustainability awards.

The state body has announced 53 finalists across a range of categories for its Tidy Towns and Cities prizes, which recognise, celebrate and share environmental achievements and strong community spirit across Victoria.

 

Local finalists for this year’s awards are:

• Farm My School by Bellarine Secondary College (community award)
• Ocean Mind, Torquay (community)
• Torquay Rubbish Rangers (litter)
• Climate safe rooms by Geelong Sustainability, City of Greater Geelong and CSIRO (wellbeing)
• Modern reusable cloth nappies program, City of Greater Geelong (EPA waster prevention and reduction)
• Environmental restoration by Friends of Bellarine Rail Trail (sustainability)
• Geelong Community Solar Program, City of Greater Geelong (energy)
• Barwon South West Community Power Hub, Geelong Ssutainability (energy)

The local finalists have earned an invite to a state awards ceremony in Melbourne on October 23.

Keep Australia Beautiful CEO Olivia Lynch said the organisation looked forward to celebrating their achievements.

 

“As we roll out the red (recycled, of course) carpet for the Tidy Towns and Cities Sustainability Awards finalists, our excitement knows no bounds. These community champions are the trailblazers of togetherness – on a mission to spruce up our environment and keep our natural treasures safe and sound.
