Local legend to be remembered

February 22, 2024 BY

NORMAN Stanley Browning, a beloved member of the Torquay community, will be remembered tomorrow (Friday, February 23) in a memorial service at the Torquay Football Netball Club.

Norm passed away suddenly on Thursday last week at the age of 76.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra, and children, Nigel and Lainie.

Norm moved to Torquay in 1964 at the age of 17 with his family.

He quickly joined the Torquay Football Club, eventually becoming a club committee member.

During his time on the committee, he was instrumental in making the organisation a sporting club, bringing together its previously separated football and cricket factions.

His wife, Sandra, also played an integral role, helping with the club’s weekly Thursday night dinners.

This influence flowed through to Nigel and Lainie who played football and netball with the club, respectively.

Initially a bricklayer by trade, Norm owned a menswear store in Torquay from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s.

The memorial service will be held at the Torquay Football Netball Club – McCartney Oval – at 1A Geelong Road, Torquay today at 2pm.
