FIFTEEN individuals and four volunteer groups have been presented with Local Legend status for their unsung efforts in the community.
The Surf Coast Shire officially recognised its Local Legends last week at a presentation ceremony to coincide with National Volunteer Week (May 19 to May 25).
A record turnout of more than 70 people packed into the council chambers to congratulate all recipients on their devotion to their given field.
Recipients were presented with either a Community Commitment Award, Community Impact Award or Volunteer Excellence.

Among the winners were wildlife rescuer Jason Cichocki, scout leader Marie McPadden, surf lifesaving volunteer Health Armstrong, community postie Cameron McFarlane, radio presenter David Steele, the Lorne volunteering ladies group and All Aboard DiSABILITY Support Services volunteers.
Surf Coast Shire chief executive officer Robyn Seymour congratulated all winners.
“The community is so much richer for the incredible work each and every one of [them] do,” she said.
“It’s fantastic to celebrate [them] and their commitment to the community and the efforts they do to make everyone’s lives better in
the Surf Coast.”

Mayor Mike Bodsworth agreed.
“National Volunteer Week is a week to reflect on the importance of volunteers,” he said.
“Within the Surf Coast municipality, we have more than 200 volunteers fulfilling roles.
“As a council we are very appreciative of the talent that we have out in our communities and appreciate their roles in making the community a better place.
“Volunteering is not just about giving, it’s a very healthy thing to do, it’s mentally, physically and morally healthy.
“I congratulate all of them and a very sincere thankyou to all.”
