Leisure Networks is getting more children active within the Bellarine community thanks to a great partnership with Bellarine Community Health (BCH).

The two organisations have brought their own Mini Movers exercise program to life to give children from Portarlington Primary School, St Leonards Primary School and Portarlington Preschool, the opportunity to improve their motor skills in a fun and engaging way.

Many of the recent sessions have focused on acquiring soccer skills as its popularity booms in the aftermath of the Matilda’s successes at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The program has also been designed to help children build on both their emotional and social capabilities.

Leisure Networks program coordinator, Tori Honner said the program is already off to a flying start.

One of the soccer skill sessions was run at Portarlington Primary School.

“Leisure Networks is all about building active and connected communities, and sport is at the heart of that.

“We want children to get early exposure to lots of different types of sport, to help them find something they love that they can pursue as they get older.

“As well as getting active, the children benefit from other strategies such as perseverance, sociability and self-esteem.

“These are really important skills that we know will support children as they move through primary school.”

BCH Healthy Communities Planner, Chloe McKenzie said the program would ensure children were making positive steps towards a healthier future.

“Bellarine Community Health’s, Healthy and Connected Communities Team (HCCT) are thrilled to be partnering with Leisure Networks to bring the Mini Movers program to children on the Bellarine Peninsula.

“BCH is always looking for ways we can help to get more children and families on the Bellarine active.”
