HUNDREDS of donated items have made their way to Torquay Food Aid ahead of Christmas Day as part of a festive offering from one of Torquay’s schools.

More than 100 Grade 4 students at Torquay College have delved into their own cupboards to provide more than 500 donations to Torquay Food Aid, which will be provided to those in need and facing food insecurity this holiday period.

Torquay College teacher Emma Dukker said the idea arose from the school’s focus of contributing to things outside of its fences.

“We’ve got a big focus on well-being and looking outside of ourselves.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions with kids about the gift of giving and what others get out of that, so we came up with this project, ran it by the team and watched a few videos of kids who didn’t really have much.

“We asked all of our students to bring in one item to donate, and instead they came back with bags, it was just incredible to see.”

Items donated ranged from food to non-perishables, utensils and even a pair of bikes.

Torquay Food Aid president Michael Buckley said it was an extraordinary donation by the school.

“It’s just overwhelming from our end getting so many of these donations

“These kids have obviously gone home to their parents and asked for some food, but the various types of donations will go a long way not only at this week’s giving day but well into the holidays.

“It will certainly make big difference to a lot of people, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

Ms Dukker said given the success of this year’s donation, she was confident the school could look to build on it in 2025.
