TORQUAY locals and visitors braved the extreme heat on Friday January 4 at both Cosy Corner and Torquay Surf Beach.

Families loaded up on sunscreen and zinc, with many sheltering in tents and underneath trees for shade. Temperatures rose to a scorching 42 degrees, on the total-fire-ban day across the state.

In Geelong, temperatures dropped from 42.1 to 27.7 degrees in the space of half an hour between 2.30pm and 3pm, when the cool change arrived on the gusty south-westerly wind.
