MORE than 70 people packed the beach at St George River in Lorne for the 26th edition of the Lorne Candle and Castle Competition.

Saturday’s “no rules, no age limit, and no cost” sand sculpting extravaganza invited community members to build their best creations to win a range of prizes from local businesses.

Organiser Chloe Messner said the event was a great success.

“There was a fantastic collection of creations on Saturday, which was really cool to see.

“The overall winner sculpted an amazing castle with shells to resemble balconies, while other participants crafted dolphins, a rocket, a turtle, a rowboat and much more.

“While the weather wasn’t super warm, plenty of people still turned out and had a great day!”

Ms Messner, who will now step away and hand the reins over to a new leader, hoped the event would be rejuvenated and continued in 2025.

“I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing someone take it on. It’s a wonderful community event for all ages.

“My kids are pretty sad it’s stopping. They were quite nostalgic about it over the weekend.

“It’s been a big part of our lives, but I’m keen for someone to guide it forward.”
