Lorne P-12 to host sustainability expo and concert
Lorne P-12 College VCAL students will host a Victorian Student Sustainable Development Goals Expo, inviting students from 17 schools to become further educated on sustainability practices at their ‘Lorne on the Lawn’ event.
Lorne P-12 VCAL students will today, October 28, host the expo and concert on the Lorne Foreshore which will focus on inspiring youth to take an active role in making tomorrow better than today.
The event will concentrate and centralise on the 17 UN Sustainability Goals which will all be presented through information stands, stalls, music, food vans and local business activations.
Year 11 VCAL student and event co-organiser Thomas Wallis said the team had been working on the event since February and that the hope was to have 1000 students in attendance.
“Lorne on the Lawn is a sustainability expo and almost a bit of a concert that builds upon the UN sustainability goals,” Wallis said.
“It started with our teacher Cherie Osta asking us about our passions and some of them included music, art and management.
“She then came up with the idea to have a concert/expo and to learn about the goals, which we expanded on as a class.
“It meets our outcomes for our VCAL class which gets us outside and it’s been really effective for me being a lover of music.”
Wallace said the event will include activities to help to promote sustainability in the wider community and hopefully encourage students to protect the planet.
“We are going to have a range of stalls at the event run by various organisations who align with the UN sustainability goals,” Wallis said.
“There are 17 global goals that all represent different things and stalls will be giving out tips and tricks on how to be more sustainable in each of these fields.
“Activities like lacrosse will represent good health and wellbeing and Bones MMA will also be coming down to run some workshops and have some fun.
“The CFA, Police and Fisheries are also coming as well as some of the big names, Hyundai is bringing some electric cars to look at, as well as Coles, Deakin University and some more.
“It’s going to be pretty cool to run the event and to have bands from the Surf Coast, Lorne, and even Hope D who is coming down from Brisbane to headline the event on stage.”
Queensland artist Hope D will be headlining the event from a music perspective, while the stage will also house guest speakers from Sea Shepard, the Gadabanud Traditional Owners and many more.
