LOCALS are being encouraged to bring the whole family down to St George River tomorrow (Saturday, February 24) to participate in what may be the last Lorne Candle and Castle Competition.

The 25th anniversary of the event will be founder Chloe Messner’s last one in charge, with the hope someone will guide the concept beyond 2024.

The sand sculpture extravaganza will again have a “no rules, no age limit, and no cost” mantra and invite community members to build their best creation to win prizes from local businesses.

Ms Messner said excitement was high heading into her final event.

“It’s obviously a super fun way of engaging the community and is unique in its own regard with being for all ages.

“For a long time, something like this was missing and didn’t happen in Lorne, but we were proud to get something going.

“It’s been a great way of engaging people from all along the Surf Coast. It’s just the right time for me to step away.

“Here’s hoping someone is up for taking it on and helping to keep it going in the future.”

The event will begin at 6.30pm and run until just after dark.
