Lorne Central recognises town’s unsung heroes
LORNE Central has named the last of its Lorne Legends, finishing their campaign to recognise those who contribute most to the community.
Each week for the past four weeks, Lorne Central has been announcing a new legend and awarding them a $100 voucher.
The legends are people nominated by the community for their good deeds during a difficult period. The people who nominated the recipients were also gifted a voucher for high tea.
Lorne Central owner Bryce Newcomb said he was pleased the community had embraced the campaign and helped direct people’s focus to something positive.
“I’ve heard a lot about it from the community. It’s been really good, I think it gave people a different focus every week to look on.”
Pakitu Henry, Jason Phieler, Jonn Stewart and Paul Upham were the four individuals named Lorne Legends.
Mr Newcomb said while they were deserving winners, it was difficult to only choose four.
“There’s plenty of unsung heroes who’ve done a lot for our community.”
Mr Upham was the fourth and final legend to be announced.
Mr Upham is owner of the Lorne Hotel and vice president of the Lorne Business and Tourism Association (LBTA). In both these roles, Mr Upham has sought to get businesses within Lorne to collaborate and adapt to the changing circumstances.
Though the reintroduction of Stage 3 restrictions has prevented tourists from coming to Lorne, Mr Upham said the LBTA is striving to ensure businesses are as well-placed as possible.
“Now is just really about communicating and keeping in touch with all the business owners to see how they’re tracking, to see what support they currently need, and just making sure they’re aware of what grants and other opportunities are available.”
Mr Upham said he appreciated his efforts being recognised through the awards.
“I think it’s fantastic for everyone who got nominated.
“It’s always nice to have people understand there are people in town working in behind to try and support the community.”
