Madi Browne named new patron of Read The Play
READ the Play has announced renowned netballer Madi Browne has joined the organisation as a patron.
Noted for her dedication and exceptional achievements on the court, Browne’s involvement strengthens Read the Play’s commitment to empowering young people and promoting mental health awareness.
She joins fellow Read the Play patrons Cameron Ling, a former Geelong Cats captain and AFL premiership player, known for his leadership both on and off the field; and Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, one of Australia’s leading adolescent psychologists, widely respected for his expertise in youth mental health.
Browne made her domestic netball league debut in 2006 with the Melbourne Kestrels in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy before joining the Melbourne Vixens in 2008 to compete in the ANZ Championship.
She further honed her skills with the West Coast Fever during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, before rejoining the Vixens in 2011.Browne’s netball career is marked by several accolades, including Most Valued Player at both the Fever and the Vixens – an honour she received twice at each club.
n 2012, she swept all of Netball Australia’s most prestigious awards, being named the ANZ Championship Player of the Year, International Player of the Year, and the Liz Ellis Diamond.
She made history again in 2014, leading the Melbourne Vixens to their second ANZ Championship title and becoming the first Australian netballer to win the Liz Ellis Diamond twice.
Browne retired from netball in 2020.”I’m honoured to join Read the Play as a patron,” she said.
“Health is just as important as physical health, and Read the Play empowers young people to recognise that.
“I’m proud to be part of a program that makes such a positive impact in our local community.
“Playing junior netball at South Barwon Football Netball Club taught me the value of community and the support we all need as we grow.
“Programs like Read the Play are vital for helping young people build confidence and develop the mental strength to navigate everyday challenges, both in sport and in life.”
Read the Play is a Geelong-based youth mental health and wellbeing program that educates young people on mental health issues, provides guidance on where to seek help, and teaches them how to support their peers. Through partnerships with local sports clubs and community organisations, Read the Play equips young people with the tools to navigate life’s challenges, fostering a supportive environment for all.
The program’s general manager Michelle Gerdtz said she was “absolutely thrilled” to welcome Madi Browne as a patron of Read the Play.
