TORQUAY Golf Club’s management is in good hands following the appointment of long-standing member Steve Menegazzo as club captain ahead of summer.

An on-and-off member of the club for more than 30 years, Mr Menegazzo was sworn in as club captain on Sunday, a proud moment for the Torquay resident.

“It’s been a big week, to be honest,” Mr Menegazzo said.

“I’ve been down here for 20-odd years in the real estate industry, so I decided to take on a role at the golf club along with so many others that contribute their time.

“The committee I have alongside me is a well-known and knowledgeable one and to be frank, it’s more about the group as opposed to just myself.”

Forming the committee is president Peter Oliver and the first female vice president in Torquay’s 102-year history, Sue Barnes.

Mr Menegazzo’s right-hand man Warren Gaunt will act as vice-captain, while Vern Wilson (treasurer), John Potter (committee member), Gail Rooney (committee member) and Chris Benson (committee member) round out the committee group.

Mr Menegazzo said he was looking forward to the challenge of getting the club back to where it was prior to the pandemic, after a stagnant two years of operations coupled with the torrential downfall of rain hitting Victoria last month.

“I’ll be working alongside course management and golf operations moving forward, taking on feedback and aiming to improve the course as best we can.

“There is always opportunity for community initiatives, most recently we held the Torquay SLSC Foundation Golf Day, we host golf days for organisations such as Jan Juc SLSC, Rip Curl, and others.

“Maintaining open communications and offering opportunities with open arms will be a focus of mine and the club’s, as well as getting people back on the course and back into White’s Paddock, our clubhouse.”

Torquay Golf Club is currently holding its Club Championships, the biggest event of the year, and is in planning stages of resuming twilight events as part of preparation for summer.
