DISCOVERY of microbats at Winchelsea Mud Hut has again delayed a reconstruction project for the structure.

Surf Coast Shire contractors earlier this month found a tiny winged mammal and a gecko during partial demolition and believe more could be sheltering in the building.

The council has put off full demolition until September, when it believes the seasonal visitors will have moved on.

“Winchelsea’s Mud Hut renewal project has progressed to construction phase but partial demolition of the hut has revealed presence of fauna including a microbat, meaning full demolition will not proceed until September,” a shire statement said.

“Council’s contracted ecologist discovered a microbat, pictured, and a gecko during careful removal of sections of the structure and believes more microbats might be located in ridge capping which could not be removed due to the instability of the building.

“Full demolition will not proceed until the ecologist is satisfied all fauna is safe.

“We look forward to seeing the community-led design for the replacement shelter take shape and appreciate the patience of Winchelsea community members.”

A family of bats had also delayed construction that was due to start in January.

That delay allowed time for community members to gather a petition opposing the original replacement design, leading to further community consultation.

The shire adopted a new design at its May meeting that incorporated more natural materials.
