Mobile ‘story time’ ready to roll

March 24, 2022 BY

GEELONG Regional Library’s much-loved Story Time sessions for children will roll into the Surf Coast towns of Anglesea and Winchelsea this month.

Story Times Goes Mobile will be in Anglesea today (March 24) at 1pm and in Winchelsea next Friday (April 1) at 2pm.

Story Time sessions are designed to help children discover the magic of stories, as well as encouraging a lifelong love of reading.

This will be the first time they have been taken on the road to mobile library stops as part of a pilot program which will be reviewed, with the possibility of expanding Story Time Goes Mobile sessions to other areas and towns.

Run by qualified children and youth services librarians, the sessions are a mix of fun songs, interactive stories and literacy activities aimed at children aged three to five.

Following the Story Time session the children are welcome to explore the mobile library and borrow some books to take home.

Geelong Regional Library Corporation board chair Cr Ron Nelson said this activity delivered important early literacy programs for people who cannot easily access a library.

“Victorian libraries are a leading provider of early literacy support to preschool children, and taking Story Time on the road will allow more community members to access these invaluable programs,” he said.

“Geelong Regional Libraries serves a community of more than 350,000 people across 8,953 km², from regional centres to small towns.

“Our libraries don’t just exist within the four walls of our libraries – we understand that coming to a library isn’t easy for everyone, and we’re so pleased we will be able to bring Story Time to some of our communities closer to their homes.”

The Bellarine & Surfcoast Mobile Library is one of three mobile libraries operated by Geelong Regional Libraries.

Today’s Anglesea session will be at the Anglican Church of the Transfiguration, 2 Camp Road, from 1-1.30pm and the April 1 session will be at Winchelsea Community House, 28 Hesse Street, from 2-2.30pm. Bookings are not required.

Event attendees over 18 years old will need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or valid medical exemption upon entry.
