More traffic lights to be built in Torquay
THE Surf Coast Shire has announced plans to install traffic lights at the intersection of Bristol Road and Surf Coast Highway in Torquay, aiming to improve both traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
This upgrade will enable drivers to turn both right and left from Bristol Road onto the highway, a change from the current setup that restricts right turns to buses only.
Shire mayor Liz Pattison said the overall impact of the lights would be positive.
“I know there can be an initial reluctance for more traffic lights in town, but these will certainly make a positive difference for so many.
“With the petrol station on the corner, it’s a busy intersection. Traffic lights will make it flow a lot better.
“It means all those driving home from the supermarket and shops will be able to turn right out of Bristol Road onto the highway.
“It will also create a much-needed, safe highway crossing point.
“There are no other signalised crossings at this end of the highway and often I see kids and teenagers trying to navigate their way across the highway there.”
Additionally, the project will introduce signalised pedestrian crossings on both roads, providing a safer crossing option for pedestrians.
The intersection will also offer access to the nearby service road, while traffic on the service road will be directed to use the Zeally Bay Road intersection to enter the highway.
A new footpath is set to be constructed along the western side of the highway, extending from the pedestrian crossing to the northern edge of the St Therese Church property.
Tenders for the construction have been advertised, with the project expected to begin in the middle of this year and wrap up by March or April 2025.
The project, which underwent community consultation in 2021, has been adjusted based on public feedback, including the implementation of one-way access from the intersection to the service road.
It forms part of the Torquay Jan Juc Development Contribution Plan, designed to support the area’s growth by requiring contributions from developers towards needed infrastructure.
