Moriac Primary School turns 100

November 2, 2022 BY

MORIAC Primary School marked 100 years of education over the weekend with a community open day.

A crowd of more than 300 people, including past and present students and their parents, teachers and principals were treated on Saturday to a BBQ run by the local CFA, a cake stall and tours of the school where memorabilia of its centenary was on display.

“We had a past staff member provide musical entertainment, a face painter, caricature artist and our After School Care Provider Kelly Club provide sport and art-based activities for students,” Principal Mark Zahra said.

Established in 1922 by the Moriac Progress Association on land donated by the Deppeler Family, the original weatherboard school has since grown to an enrolment of 200 students.

“Our vision of ‘creating students who become engaged citizens and can strengthen the wellbeing of their society,’ is at the core of everything we do and this vision is underpinned by the following guiding principles: Exceptional, Responsible and Respectful,” Mr Zahra said.

“We are committed to providing a 21st century education for all students…our work is focused on developing the whole student and we aspire to students graduating at Year 6 ready to take on the rigours of secondary education with the prospect of really making a difference.”

Although located 200 kilometres west of Melbourne, Mr Zahra said the school teaches children to have an international outlook on the world.

“Beyond academic success we aspire to students graduating as global citizens with a strong character…students who are critical and creative thinkers, great communicators and a strong ability to collaborate,” he said.
