FOUR Surf Coast Secondary College Year Ten students are taking up the Relay For Life fundraiser challenge to raise vital funds for the Cancer Council.

Students Nash Cox, Riley Cotter, Shinay Grobler and Lily Jarman will band together and facilitate the event on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18, and are hopeful of attracting over 200 competitors and raising over $5,000 for the Cancer Council to continue helping cancer victims and their families Australia-wide.

The team of Year 10 students will kick off proceedings at 4pm on the Friday with an opening ceremony, and then kickstart the marathon of 20 hours of moving which will wrap up at 12pm on Saturday.

The four Year 10 students are hoping to attract more than 200 people to the event, and also aim to raise $5,000 for the Cancer Council.

Team member Nash Cox said the idea to run the event came during a leadership camp in 2022 and centralised on the goal of bringing the community back together after the pandemic.

“The reason we chose to run a Relay For Life is because as a community it is a great opportunity to start the New Year with positive energy,” Cox said.

“We think this concept will really help our community get active and help everyone as a whole after COVID.

“The event involves everyone, and we are all affected by cancer in some way or another, everyone has to deal with it.

“To have this moment to get together after so many years of being away from each other is something that is really special for us.”

Year 10 student Riley Cotter can’t wait for March’s event.

Cox said the group have been working on the concept for the last six to eight months, including over the summer break.

He said the team have grown much closer while working on the fundraising drive.

“We all didn’t really know each other that well before this and we’ve all just clicked from working together,” Cox said.

“We’ve all grown much closer and have become really great friends that can be truthful to each other with our ideas and concepts for this fundraiser.”

The Relay for Life team thank Liuzzi Group, McCartney Real Estate, the Surf Coast Times, Rip Curl, Quiksilver and MCG Signs for jumping on board as event sponsors thus far.

The Year 10 students are hopeful of securing more sponsorship support to help cover medical, first aid and security fees.
