VICTORIAN musicians, venues and industry professionals will have new opportunities for funding and support as the State Government rolls out fresh initiatives to strengthen the local music scene.

Creative Industries Minister Colin Brooks has launched the Victorian Music Industry Advisory Council and opened applications for the latest rounds of the Music Works grants and 10,000 Gigs: Victorian Gig Fund.

The Music Works program provides grants for artists and industry workers to support career-building projects including writing, recording, touring, marketing and professional development. Mr Brooks said the funding would help strengthen Victoria’s music industry by creating opportunities for artists and venues.

“We’re supporting Victorian artists and venues to thrive, creating more opportunities for creative projects, live gigs, and local jobs while strengthening our state’s renowned music industry,” he said.

“As well as backing local artists, venues and events, I look forward to working with the new Victorian Music Industry Advisory Council to ensure that Victoria remains the beating heart of Australian music.”

Since 2015, the program has invested almost $13 million into more than 850 projects, helping to launch acts such as Amyl and the Sniffers, Alice Ivy and Alex Lahey.

The 10,000 Gigs: Victorian Gig Fund opened for applications on January 30, offering live music venues up to $11,000 to stage paid gigs featuring Victorian artists.

Licensed venues in outer-metropolitan and regional areas are eligible to apply.

The newly-formed Victorian Music Industry Advisory Council will provide advice on challenges and opportunities in the industry.

Chaired by Concord Australia managing director Jaime Gough, the 14-member group includes artists, promoters, venue operators and managers.

Mr Gough said the council’s role would be to support the long-term future of the industry.

“I look forward to working with fellow council members to provide sound advice to government at a pivotal time for the Victorian music industry,” he said.
