BRAVE Creations Studio in Torquay has introduced new art workshops tailored for the neurodivergent and autistic communities.

Artist and facilitator Jo Duffy has long been passionate about volunteering within the disability sector.

“I’ve facilitated workshops for a diverse range of groups, from autistic children to people with dementia,” she said.

“I strongly believed there was a need to establish a dedicated space in our region for both children and adults from the autistic community, as well as those with intellectual disabilities.”

Renowned in the professional art community as Joanna McOwen, Ms Duffy emphasised the significance of offering students mainstream opportunities, including events such as the Surf Coast Arts Trail.

“Our mission is to deliver bespoke group art sessions, fostering a sense of connection within the autistic community.”

The studio schedules workshops segmented by age, operating in 4-week blocks. The next session will start on November 18.

“We ensure an intimate learning environment with small groups, limited to no more than four individuals. Our offerings span children, teenagers, and adults,” Ms Duffy said.

“While I’m not a registered NDIS provider, my program is primarily designed for NDIS self-managed clients.”

In addition to her facilitator role, Ms Duffy is a professional artist, holding a BA (Hons) in Textile Design and Printmaking. Over time, she has pivoted her artistic focus towards painting landscapes, which are showcased in local galleries.
