New-look Chargers uniform released
A NEW uniform design has been unveiled at Wurdi Baierr Stadium to mark the start of the next chapter of the Surfcoast Chargers basketball program.
Surfcoast Basketball Association (SBA) has announced a new uniform will be provided to its representative players over the next two years, designed by 14-year-old Chargers player, Gunditjmara Djap Wurrung woman, and Torquay resident Elleischa Sizer.
SBA secretary Rebecca Lewis said the new uniforms would be worn by the club’s Youth League Men’s side during the 2023 Big V campaign, with other sides to receive their kits the subsequent season, barring any production delays.
“I consulted with Elleischa’s mother Jodie knowing that her daughter was a talented artist, and when I approached the SBA Board with the idea, it was approved almost instantly that Elleischa would lead the design of the uniform,” Ms Lewis said.
“We were stoked with the idea given we knew she was already a part of our program, and it came together really well.
“The design reflects a lot of the club’s values such as inclusiveness, community, and respect. It paints a wonderful picture of who we are as a club.”
Presently a Charger in the Under 16 firsts side, Ms Sizer said she has been playing basketball since she was in Grade 2 and was proud to take on the task of designing the new uniform.
“Firstly, I pay my respects to the Wadawurrung peoples, the traditional owners of the lands that the Surfcoast Chargers call their home in Torquay,” she said.
“The ocean and its waves are depicted at the top of the design, this reflects our local place the Surfcoast, our home, a place the Chargers families all enjoy.
“The four circles each represent different meanings. The first represents inclusion of all ages gender, race and backgrounds. This circle also represents the many parts of our community.
“The second circle represents the water of the Surf Coast’s Ocean. The bottom-left circle represents man and woman and the meeting place known as Wurdi Baierr Stadium, the home of the Surfcoast Chargers.
“Lastly, the bottom-right circle represents the journey of the club and my own journey.”
The new design has already been printed on the season passes of this year’s members.
