ANYONE who’s tried to find space for indoor sports in our region will know how difficult it can be.

Demand for courts has skyrocketed, with participation rates in indoor sports here growing faster than the state average.

That’s why the Waurn Ponds Sporting Complex is such a big win for our community.

Construction has now officially begun on this state-of-the-art facility, and when it opens, it will be one of the most exciting and inclusive sports centres in the region.

The complex is fully funded by the Victorian government through the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program.

The new complex will feature six high ball multi-sport courts, a regional-level gymnastics facility, community dance hall and studio, and flexible meeting and social spaces with kiosk and public lounge areas.

Outside, more than 300 carparking spaces will be available, with electric vehicle charging facilities.

It has been designed to serve everyone, from grassroots clubs and school teams to regional competitions and community events.

Importantly, the design has been shaped by consultation with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

The colour palette, materials, artwork and landscaping have all been informed by Wadawurrung People.

Inclusivity and accessibility have also been top of mind in the design process.

The complex will include a Changing Places facility, a sensory room, a multi-faith space, and a parent’s room, making sure people of all abilities and backgrounds can feel welcome and comfortable.

It’s also being built to high environmental standards and is registered to achieve a 5-Star Green Star building certification, a reflection of our region’s growing commitment to sustainability.

The project is being delivered by ADCO Constructions, who bring deep experience in building top-tier sports infrastructure, including the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna and Ikon Park in Carlton North.

The design has been led by ARM Architecture, whose thoughtful approach has ensured the complex will be not only impressive but also practical and community focused.

Greater Geelong is currently seeing investment in three major regional sports facilities — this complex in Waurn Ponds, as well as the upgraded hockey infrastructure at Stead Park in Corio and the new indoor courts at the Armstrong Creek Sports Centre.

With so many new families calling Waurn Ponds and the surrounding areas home, this new sporting complex will play a significant role in supporting active, connected, and healthy lifestyles.

We all know how important it is to stay active and connected with our community, whether it’s through basketball, gymnastics, dancing, pickleball, or simply gathering at the local sports centre to watch games.

Construction of this new facility is expected to be complete in early 2027.

I look forward to seeing the complex take shape over the coming months and to the day we welcome the community through its doors.

This project marks a significant milestone for Waurn Ponds and will have a lasting impact on our broader region.
