Nippers registrations open at Torquay
The program is open to children aged five to 13 and aims to provide a pathway for future lifesavers through life saving skills development and surf sports.
Participants will develop surf skills like wading, swimming, surf swimming, board paddling and beach flags.
They will also learn beach safety, and how to stay safe by the water.
Torquay SLSC president Matt Carmichael said the club was expecting more than 550 Nippers in the 2024-25 season.
“We are looking forward to a bumper season, with memberships really starting to boom now the football season is over.
“We’ve got some great things planned both on and off the beach.
“Jacinta Winter has taken reins of the Nipper program and is going great guns, and we’ve also appointed a new Nippers welfare officer who will help us work with integrating more children with diverse needs into our programs.
“Everyone is welcome to attend any of our sessions. We can’t wait to see you all on the beach.”
Ms Winter echoed his sentiment and said she looked forward to leading the program.
“We are really excited for it to start, particularly after a bumper recent season.
“Last year we were at about 550 Nippers, with 300 or more on the beach at one time.
“We invite families new and old to be part of season 2024-25.”
The program will feature two major components: the summer holiday program and the junior aquatic surf sports.
Junior aquatic surf sports training will begin on October 20.
Sessions will be held on Sunday mornings from 9am to 10.30am and Wednesday afternoons from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
The Lorne Nipper Training Champ is tentatively booked for November 15 to November 17. All are welcome.
Summer holiday program participants will begin their Nippers program on December 27.
The Torquay SLSC will also hold a preliminary swim assessment the week before the Nippers program starts.
