No lights no lycra returns to Torquay
The Surf Coast will soon have the perfect platform for people to dance without limits or judgement when the Torquay chapter of No Lights No Lycra (NLNL) returns next week.
Known as the original dance in the dark movement, NLNL operates around the world and was operating from 2013-2016 in Torquay before conflicting commitments forced the previous organisers to close.
Now, after a six-year hiatus, local co-organisers and ambassadors Alex Sturman and Sara Elzahbi are bringing the boogie back to the Torquay Improvement Association Hall on Tuesday nights for one-hour sessions.
“It’s a liberating experience to be able to dance to loud music, in the dark, moving however you want to in your own space,” Ms Sturman said.
“It’s a very inclusive light-hearted judgment-free zone where you can shake some energy off and connect through music and movement with community.”
Ms Sturman said the ethos underpinning the drug and alcohol-free event, is freedom, fun, movement and community.
“You have a little warm up, and then dance to a variety of music we direct – we also take requests – then we warm down and leave,” she said.
“When the music is on and dancing is going down, there’s also no talking, that’s reserved for before and after the main event.
“We kind of hope that people also use the time as they turn up and leave to connect with people in Torquay and say hello,” Ms Sturman said.
The not-for-profit event is open to all, and there is disability access to the hall.
NLNL is on Tuesday’s between 7.15pm – 8.15pm at the Torquay Improvement Association Hall.
