THE community is being called up to cast their vote for an everyday hero making a difference in Geelong and surrounds.

Nominations for the Westfield Local Heroes program are now open in recognition and celebration of individuals who are dedicated to their organisations and causes which support the community or the environment.

Three finalists will be announced from the Geelong region, with the hero grant recipient receiving $20,000 for their organisation or cause, and the two additional finalists gaining a $5,000 grant.

Janice McGowan from the Christ Church Community Meals Program was last year’s recipient of the $20,000 grant in Geelong.

Ms McGowan has provided daily meals to those in need at Christ Church Geelong for the past 35 years, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Friend in Me founder Louise Larkin and the Barwon Health Foundation’s Roxie Bennett received the $5,000 finalist grants.

Scentre Group national community manager Pam Wilson said she looked forward to seeing the amazing credentials of those nominated from the region.

“The Westfield Local Heroes program exists to recognise individuals who dedicate themselves to making a difference in their communities. Our ninth year of the program brings with it significant milestones that we expect to reach, including a total of over $10 million in grants awarded and over 1000 alumni since the program’s inception in 2018.

“We’re pleased to announce that nominations for this year’s Westfield Local Heroes are now open, and we look forward to recognising even more everyday heroes. Nominating someone is easy and it can have a significant and long-lasting impact on the lives of many.”

Nominations close on 12 March.
