THE Rotary Club of Torquay, Commerce Torquay and the Surf Coast Shire are all encouraging local traders to get their entries into this year’s Rotary Torquay Business Excellence Awards.

The nomination period is about halfway done for the awards, which promote and recognise the most outstanding businesses in the 3228 postcode.

Rotary Club of Torquay member Trevor Hall said nominations opened on July 1 and would close on August 31, and interested businesses should apply as soon as possible.

“We’re trying to stimulate a little bit of interest – we’ve been out distributing leaflets and you get the interest when you’re there, but then the door closes and something else comes along.”

Commerce Torquay has teamed up with the Rotary Club of Torquay to promote the initiative more widely this year.

“We’re engaing first and foremost with our members, and also wandering in and having a chat to people and showing them how to enter, so hopefully we’ll get a few more entries from the business community,” Commerce Torquay president Jeff Crow said.

Surf Coast mayor Liz Pattison is also backing the awards.

“We’re proud to have a history of innovation and entrepreneurship across the Surf Coast Shire, and we want to see a thriving, connected business network,” she said.

“The Rotary Torquay Business Excellence Awards are a great initiative, acknowledging local businesses and recognising the role they play in creating sustainable local economies.

“I encourage community members to nominate a business that deserves praise through these awards.”

The revised categories for the 2023 awards are:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Volunteer organisations or individual
  • Professional service organisation
  • Tourism and hospitality
  • Surf industry enterprise, and
  • Overall business of the year.

Selection criteria include impact on the enviroment, demonstrating the pursuit of excellence in work practices, quality of personal attributes towards customers and staff, and customer service or standard of service delivery.

Finalists will be selected from September 1-6 and the awards presented on October 2.
