TORQUAY Golf Club legend Peter Oliver has been has been made a life member, lauded for his strong leadership and community spirit.

The much-loved local figure became one of only 25 people in the Torquay Golf Club’s 105-year history to be inducted as a life member at its annual general meeting last weekend.

Mr Oliver and his wife joined the club as members in 2004, before the former joined the committee board in 2008, a year after RACV took over management.

He served on the committee for 12 years in a variety of roles. Prioritising the protection of membership rights was a key focus.

Mr Oliver played a pivotal role in producing the centenary book and video to celebrate the Torquay Golf Club’s 100 years in 2020.

He then had two years away before coming back on as president for a two-year term.

Mr Oliver handed over the reins to the club’s first female president Kathy Naoumidis last year.

The Torquay resident said he was over the moon to secure such a prestigious honour.

“I’m pretty chuffed, there’s only 25 in the history of the club; they are few and far between so it’s a real honour.

“It’s just been fantastic to be part of it. Coming out of the pandemic, everyone wasn’t sure what the future held and the club was in the same sort of stalemate.

“As president I wanted to come in and help reinvigorate the place and get it going. Alongside a great committee, I really believe we achieved that. Now we are in great hands with our first female president in Kathy.”

Mr Oliver remains involved with the club in a committee capacity and hopes to stay on board for many years to come.
