LORNE’S water managers are asking local businesses, residents and regular visitors for input into its future water strategies.

Barwon Water has kicked off a consultation process that it says aims to create a sustainable and resilient water future for the town.

Barwon Water says Lorne’s steep terrain and seasonal population changes were the key factors it considered when drafting the town’s water strategies.

Lorne’s water supply is sourced from the Allen Reservoir on the St George River, about three kilometres west of the town.

While Barwon Water has permission to use water from the St George and Erskine rivers, but said low flows during summer when the resource was most needed meant it relied on the reservoir.

Community discussions at Lorne last month.

The authority stated it was keen to hear more about local priorities and aspirations shared within the community.

“We are eager to understand and support the values and priorities of residents, businesses, community groups and regular visitors.

“We want to work together to plan for long-term water security, climate change mitigation, affordability, environmental preservation, and any other key values that the community shares.”

Barwon Water has already hosted community pop-ups in the past fortnight, and will host an online webinar on Wednesday, July 12.

It has also opened an online survey for Lorne residents to submit their views, which closes July 23.

Barwon Water will take the feedback on board before it shares sustainable and resilient water future options later this year.

It will then develop its strategies and actions plans during 2024.
