LORNE’S famous Pier to Pub race will carry a new sponsor with it into 2020 as it enters its 40th year.

Powercor has recently signed on as race sponsor for the next five years.

The 1.2 kilometre race on January 11 will likely see about 5,000 swimmers take to the water at the Lorne Pier, finishing on the foreshore in front of the Lorne SLSC clubhouse.

The Lorne SLSC also organises the event, and runs it through its volunteers. Club president Paul McMaster said the partnership with Powercor would be a great benefit to the race.

“We are super excited to have Powercor on board, they are doing fantastic things in the community, working hard especially in those regional areas, and we are appreciative and excited to have Powercor involved for the next five years.”

Seven-time Pier to Pub winner Sam Sheppard and six-time winner Nanntali Marshall were both present at the partnership announcement.

Ms Marshall said the event was a key part of the community, and that she was gladdened to see Powercor supporting it.

“I’ve got a 10-year-old now and we can’t wait for her to be swimming in two years’ time (the race requires participants to be at least 12), and while it is close to my heart having won it six times I take it a little easier now – and kudos to the club.

“I have a house at Anglesea and am a member there and it is great to see Powercor putting back into the wider Great Ocean Road community.”

Powercor head of health, safety and environment Steve Bourke said he was particularly eager to partner the event, having enjoyed competing in it himself.

“This will be my third time swimming in this iconic event and having Powercor support it will make it even more special.

“We want to support communities to be happy, healthy and safe and the Pier to Pub is one way we are doing this.”

Entry before December 14 is $70, and $100 afterwards.
