PARTICIPANTS in last weekend’s Surf Coast Trail Marathon were first inspired by a screening of environmental documentary Takayna in Torquay.

Patagonia Torquay hosted the screening of the film – which asks the question “can trail running save a forest?” – during race bib collection for the marathon on Friday night. The Tarkine region of north-western Tasmania is home to one of the last undisturbed tracts of Gondwanan rainforest in the world, and one of the highest concentrations of Aboriginal archaeology in the hemisphere, but is under threat from extraction industries, including logging and mining.

The documentary is told through the experiences of trail running activist Nicole Anderson and environmentalist and ex-Greens Party leader Bob Brown.
