DAMAGE to Banyul-Warri Fields has led Surf Coast Shire to remove pedestrian gates from the Grenville and Polwarth ovals and three soccer pitches due to safety concerns.
Works will begin on June 16 to prevent unsupervised dogs from damaging the playing surfaces, following multiple injuries and ongoing complaints.
Over the past year, the shire received 48 reports from clubs and associations about unsafe conditions. Maintenance teams have regularly repaired holes caused by dogs.
“The planned removal of the gates does not change the current regulations in place for using the sportsgrounds,” shire general manager of community life Damian Waight said.
“Dogs are still welcome to be off-leash outside of organised sport/training or preparation times, provided they’re under effective control.”
The fields are primarily used for sport, and the shire has a legal responsibility to ensure a safe environment.
Following community feedback, the gate on the south-eastern end of Grenville Oval, closest to Merrijig Drive, will be reinstated.
Sports clubs were consulted and supported the changes. Dog owners were also engaged.
“The planned removal of the gates promotes responsible dog ownership by making it necessary for dogs to be kept under effective control while off leash,” Mr Waight said.
“It also brings Banyul-Warri Fields into line with every other sporting reserve in the shire, as none are fully enclosed with pedestrian gates.
“We understand the majority are managing their pets responsibly, however there are people who are not properly supervising their dogs.”
