Pets step out in GAWS fundraiser

MORE than 250 people and their dogs put paws to the floor and raised $11,700 for Geelong Animal Welfare Society.

The annual Paws for GAWS charity walk took place on Sunday along the Geelong waterfront.

The large crowd and their four-legged friends enjoyed a relaxing 4km stroll and plenty of fun activities.

A highlight of the day was the Pooch Parade, with dogs invited to perform on stage for best trick, waggiest tail and best dressed prizes.

 

Winners were selected by Paws for GAWS community ambassador and former MasterChef runner-up Simon Toohey and his wife Georgia Radley.

The PAW-TY Zone was also a hit, with many enjoying market stalls, face painting and games.

GAWS chief executive officer Helen Cocks said it was a vibrant celebration for all to enjoy.

“We are thrilled so many people joined us for our second PAWS for GAWS event, and it was wonderful to see so many dogs -of all shapes, sizes and breeds – enjoying the day.”

All proceeds from the event will go towards reuniting lost pets with their families and finding new forever homes for those in need.

Last year, 3383 animals came into GAWS care, including 1263 dogs and puppies.

It costs GAWS $65 a day per animal to provide care and essentials while preparing them for rehoming.

“We are a charity and do not receive government funding for our shelter,” Ms Cocks said.

“We rely on the generosity of our community, and those who participated in PAWS for GAWS have helped us continue to deliver our vital work and promote responsible pet ownership.”
