FEBRUARY 15 is National Pet Adoption Day, and PETstock is partnering with PetRescue to hold special events at their stores, including those in Torquay, Waurn Ponds and Geelong.

Pet adoption experts and local rescue groups will be speaking to potential pet-owners to help them learn more about pet adoption.

PETstock Assist charity and events coordinator Jess Guilfoyle says this year they are encouraging people to “Adopt Different”.

“We want people to be open to different types of animals and breeds, to make considered and sustainable choices, and to give rescue pets a chance at a better life.

“Contrary to popular belief, many animals are surrendered to rescue groups through no fault of their own.”

Rescue pets also receive training and behavioural assessments before they are put up for adoption.

PetRescue co-founder Vickie Davy reiterated the benefits of being open-minded, saying people often find the ideal pet for them is different from what they initially perceive.

“A lot of people start their search for a new pet with a certain type, breed, or age in mind. However, your perfect match might not be the pet you think.”

Olympian, television personality and animal rescue advocate Giaan Rooney said she had experienced first-hand how rewarding pet adoption could be.

“Despite being one leg short, Lester was the perfect dog: obedient, easy to train, loving and grateful. He gave me so much and wanted so little in return. His passing last year still makes me tear up today.

“Our family will certainly be rescuing again when we’re ready for a new pet and I encourage all would-be owners looking for a pet to consider adoption.”

Last year PETstock Assist saw more than 1,000 animals rehomed on National Pet Adoption Day. This year they are hoping to build on those numbers.

PETstock Assist have also pledged more than $150,000 to wildlife organisations in states effected by the bushfires. Wildlife Victoria will be the Victorian recipient.

The Torquay PETstock, located on 18 Bristol Road, will be open from 10am-2pm on National Pet Adoption Day.
