Pier to Pub registrations expected to fill by Christmas
ORGANISERS of Lorne’s renowned Powercor Lorne Mountain to Surf and Pier to Pub say they are receiving a massive influx of registrations for the event’s long-awaited return.
Lorne Pier to Pub and Lorne Mountain to Surf Deputy Race Director Tina Westacott is warning those interested in taking part in the first in-person races in three years to get in quick, with available spots expected to sell out before the end of the year.
“Our Pier to Pub community is so excited to have the event back live in 2023,” Ms Westacott said.
“For many, this event weekend is a personal and or family ritual and to not have it for two years has had an impact.
“We’re seeing really strong numbers and expect a sell out before the Christmas break.”
Pier To Pub athletes ready to take part in the event earlier this year were shocked to learn, just four days before the race was scheduled to take place on January 8, that the race would move to a virtual format.
In 2023, the 1.2km open water swim from Lorne Pier to the beach in front of Lorne SLSC will involve more than 30 waves of swimmers beginning from 11.00am and finishing shortly after 3.00pm.
Depending on the day and the tide, the swimming distance may accumulate to be slightly longer than this.
“Our members, volunteers and local Lorne community love this event and you can see the excitement building as people realise that COVID is behind us and we’ll once again all enjoy this very special event on January 13 for the Lorne Mountain to Surf and January 14 for the Lorne Pier to Pub,” Ms Westacott added.
