Police seize car after high-speed drink-drive in Winchelsea

Police impounded a Ford Escape in Winchelsea on Friday after the driver was allegedly caught travelling at 121kmh in a 60 zone, at nearly twice the alcohol limit.

A Norlane man has had his car impounded and is expected to be charged on summons after allegedly driving at twice the speed limit and nearly double the legal alcohol limit in Winchelsea on Friday morning.

Colac Highway Patrol officers were conducting speed checks on Willis Street when they clocked a Ford Escape travelling at an alleged speed of 121kmh in a 60kmh zone at about 11.40am.

Police intercepted the vehicle and found the 45-year-old driver was unlicensed. He returned a positive preliminary breath test and was transported to a police station where he recorded an alleged breath alcohol reading of 0.091, nearly twice the limit.

His vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1,305, and he is expected to be charged on summons with several traffic offences.

The incident comes as Victoria Police launches Operation Furlong, a statewide road policing campaign running across the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

The operation will see a strong police presence on major roads leading to regional areas, targeting speeding, driver distraction and impaired driving.

Police are urging motorists to plan ahead, slow down and expect to be tested anywhere, any time for alcohol and drugs.

Operation Furlong runs from until 11.59pm on Tuesday, November 4.
