VICTORIA Police say they will have a highly visible presence on the Surf Coast during the Schoolies period.

Typically starting in mid-November after the last Year 12 exam, the annual Schoolies celebration usually sees crowds of school leavers head to popular coastal towns such as Torquay and Lorne.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said units would be on patrol “to ensure everyone can celebrate safely”.

“As in previous years, Victoria Police will be ensuring a safe environment for everyone whether a school leaver or a local community member. We will not tolerate any behaviour that threatens the safety of those around you.

“Victoria is home to some beautiful locations for school leavers including the Surf Coast and we want all visitors to these areas to enjoy all they have to offer.

“Wherever you choose to celebrate the end of your schooling career, respect the community you are in, respect the safety of those around you and help us ensure everyone has the chance to celebrate safely.

“Victoria Police will have a highly visible presence, with local police supported by state-based specialists units including Highway Patrol, Public Order Response Team, Mounted Branch and Dog Squad.”

In addition to the regular patrols, Surf Coast police will also use the Mobile Policing Unit, which the spokesperson said would “ensure there is a highly visible static presence in the area to deter any offending and ensure those celebrating feel safe”.

“Police will be targeting underage drinking, anti-social and drunken behaviour in public places and around licensed venues and accommodation.

“If you choose to impact the celebrations of your fellow school leavers deliberately and negatively, or jeopardise the safety of our community, you will be arrested.”

DrinkWise has also announced it is rolling out a “Schoolies Survival Guide” initiative to promote the importance of moderate drinking, with messages to be displayed in more than 600 retail stores across Endeavour Group, Coles, IGA Liquor and Retail Drinks Australia member venues.

Endeavour Group will be displaying the DrinkWise messaging in almost 300 Dan Murphy’s, BWS stores and ALH hotels in popular Schoolies locations.

Stores, venues and delivery drivers in the Endeavour Group in popular Schoolies locations across the country are also gearing up to crack down on any attempts by minors accessing alcohol and adults trying to supply minors with alcohol, with many stores enlisting additional security guards during Schoolies season.
