DANCE, film, trivia, history sharing, information sessions, open days, recreational outings, and intergenerational events are just some of the things residents will be able to engage with in October as part of this year’s Positive Ageing Month run by the Surf Coast Shire.

The Surf Coast Shire says it has opened bookings for its diverse array of events and activities celebrating people aged 55 and over.

Councillor Gary Allen is looking forward to this year’s calendar of events, featuring free, low-cost and community-run events across the Shire.

“While the Council will host several events, it’s fantastic that we’re mostly playing a supporting role as community groups and organisations take the reins,” Cr Allen said.

“Positive Ageing Month aligns with the Council’s work towards an age-friendly community, where older people are valued, respected and actively supported to participate in their community.

“I encourage interested people to find an event or two, book their spot, and use it as an opportunity to celebrate being a valuable citizen who contributes positively to our community.”

Positive Ageing Month falls under the annaul Victorian Seniors Festival, which this year’s theme is ‘Explore. Engage. Evolve’.

For Positive Ageing Month, the Victorian Government is allowing Seniors Card holders to travel free on public transport from October 6-13, allowing them to attend regional and metropolitan events.

The Shire has printed calendars available at its offices in Torquay, or from local community houses across the Surf Coast.

Council’s Positive Ageing Month calendar and booking details can be found at surfcoast.vic.gov.au/PositiveAgeingMonth or by calling 5261 0600.
