AS part of the Surf Coast Shire’s support of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the region will welcome Dans Bain and ‘The Lost Petition’ to Torquay on Monday, December 2.

Ms Bain’s ‘The Lost Petition’ is an ongoing textile artwork listing the women and children who have lost their lives to male violence in Australia dating back to 2008.

It will be unrolled on Polwarth Oval, Torquay on Monday between 9am and 11am where it will be filmed, as a future tool to connect the community, spark discussion, and inspire positive action.

The petition measures more than 30m long, providing a simple yet effective piece of artwork and serving as a powerful reminder about gender based violence.

“The Lost Petition sparks conversations in the community and brings home the reminder that there is still a lot be done to make sure all women and children are safe in their community,” Surf Coast Shire mayor Mike Bodsworth said.

“Let’s keep the conversations going and make sure we are shining a light on this topic at every opportunity.

“We need to make sure we create a future where people feel safe, equal and respected.

“Thank you to Dans Bain and the Torquay Community House for bringing this artwork to Torquay during the 16 Days of Activism period.”

The shire’s efforts are part of an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls.

The campaign runs each year from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day).
