Racing to support brain cancer patients

PEACE of Mind Foundation and Westfield Geelong are teaming up to host a mini version of The Amazing Race on Saturday, February 26, 2022, raising funds to support brain cancer patients and their families.

The inaugural Challenge Brain Cancer event will see sponsored teams of four competing on a course around Westfield Geelong, where they’ll visit stores to tackle a series of fun challenges.

There are some incredible prizes up for grabs too, thanks to generous sponsorship from GMHBA and Prestige Jayco.

The team that wins the challenge will win a $2,000 Westfield Gift Card and the team that raises the most funds, will also receive a $2,000 Westfield Gift Card, plus dinner for four and a limo ride.

All funds raised by teams go to Geelong-based Peace of Mind Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation providing practical support to people and their families dealing with the devastating impacts of brain cancer.

Peace of Mind interim CEO Kevin Larkins, said the foundation aims to raise at least $50,000 to support the brain cancer community.
“Brain cancer kills more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer yet receives one of the lowest levels of funding and support,” Kevin said.
“Most of that limited funding goes into brain cancer research. We all know how essential research is to finding ways to combat brain cancer in the future.
“However, research for the future does not help those living with brain cancer in the ‘here and now’.

“At Peace of Mind, we work to improve the quality of life for those with brain cancer and their families, by providing counselling and support services, respite residential retreats and financial support.

“We support families through the very tortuous processes involved in treatment and everyday living. No one else in Australia does what we do. And the need is great. And the funds raised from this event will ensure this vital work continues.”

Kevin Larkins is hopeful for community support.

“Many teams have already registered for ‘Challenge Brain Cancer’, but there are a few spots still available,” Kevin said.

“We expect the race will draw hundreds of spectators. So, get a team together, get some sponsors and be part of a really fun day to help those battling brain cancer right now!”

Each team member must commit to raise a minimum of $250 in sponsorship, with a total of $1,000 in sponsorship per team. Team members will receive an event-day t-shirt and a spectacular gift bag filled with donated products from various local businesses.

Peace of Mind welcomes local businesses to donate items for the silent auction on the day or for the gift bags.
