A NINETEEN-year record was broken this morning (Friday, January 10) in the Mountain to Surf run at Lorne, with Elwood’s Edward Marks completing the 8km course in the quickest time in the event’s 44-year-history.

Mark’s time of 21 minutes and 49 seconds was close to a minute faster than the previous record, set by former Olympian Steven Moneghetti in 2006.

More than 2,340 competitors raced in the Mountain to Surf.

Marks said he was not expecting to race as fast as he did.

“When I came through the finish line and saw the time, I knew it was pretty quick.

“The conditions were just as good as you could get. No real wind, a good temperature and pretty much perfect.

“I was tired throughout the race, but I knew I had a good lead, so just tried to maintain my form and pace.

“I’ll definitely be back next year if I can.”

Male finalists Sebastian Asher (third), Edward Marks (first) and Tom Bowers (second).

Tom Bowers finished second with a time of 22:47, while Sebastian Asher was third in a time of 23:20.

The female winner was not too far behind, with elite marathon runner Sarah Klein taking out first position in the women’s division with a time of 25:12.

“I’ve got a fair bit of adrenaline running through my system after a nice win this morning,” she said.

“I did the race last year and did just over 26 minutes, and it wasn’t until I finished today that I realised I was only eight seconds off the course record.

“I’m disappointed to not get under that record time, but it just gives me a reason to come back next year and try it again.”

Second went to Amy Robinson (25:34) and Annabelle Eastman (28:46) was third.

The Mountain to Surf event attracted more than 2,340 competitors to the forested trails along the Great Ocean Road.

The action continues in Lorne tomorrow (Saturday, January 11) with the Pier to Pub swimming race.
