Thousands of people gathered at Fishermans Beach Foreshore on Sunday as kites took to the sky with the return of the Surf Coast Kite Festival.

More than 5,000 came to the sixth instalment of the event, breaking the event’s attendance record.

The family day out included kites of all shapes and sizes, live entertainment, activities, facepainting and more.

Children enjoyed the up-close experience they got with native wildlife, while Rory Molloy from Happy Kidz Science entertained crowds with his interactive experiments.

Organised by the Jan Juc Preschool, all proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the kinder and its environmental and sustainability programs.

Jan Juc Pre School Parent Advisory Group president Paul O’Reilly said he was grateful for the support of the community.

“This event has given our families and community memories that will be cherished for years to come.

“We’re thankful for our dedicated parent and teacher volunteers who made this festival possible, along with the generous support from our sponsors.”

The festival closed with the rhythmic beats of African Drummers from One Spirit Africa.

The event was supported by major sponsors Ghanda and Torquay Toys.
