HOUSEHOLDS, businesses and community groups across the region are turning to home batteries in growing numbers, embracing a federal program designed to cut power bills and curb emissions.

More than 220 batteries have been installed across the Bellarine, Surf Coast and Geelong region through the government’s Cheaper Home Batteries program.

The $2.3 billion program, which began on July 1, aims to cut the cost of installing a small-scale battery system by 30 per cent.

Subsidies are available for batteries sized up to 100kWh, with the discount saving households, on average, $4,000 on the cost of installation.

Corangamite federal member Libby Coker said the program, which has seen 50,000 batteries installed across the country in just two months, is proving to be a success.

“Lowering bills and tackling emissions is at the heart of the Cheaper Batteries Program, and many in our communities are absolutely embracing this offer,” she said.

“This work is key to reducing emissions as we tackle climate change, and will help create a cheaper, cleaner and more self-sufficient energy system.

“I will continue to encourage more people across our region to make the most of this program; it’s such a winner for our climate and our communities.”

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said batteries provided cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy.

“In just two months, 50,000 batteries will have been installed That’s thousands of households, small businesses and community groups taking control of their energy and their bills.

“This is another clear sign that Australians want real action on climate change, and they want the benefits of renewable energy flowing to them and their communities.”
