Local businesses from around the region took out the top honours at the 2025 MBV Regional Building Awards – Western, including two major winners.
Lyons Constructions from South Geelong won Regional Commercial Builder of the Year for the Belerren Sports and Wellbeing Centre at Geelong College.
The project is a three-storey structure with a double-court gymnasium, elite training facility, changerooms, four classrooms and more.
Lyons Constructions managing director Steve Lyons said the Geelong College project was the largest the company has undertaken.
“It was an exciting and challenging project; it included a basement car park, complex structure which included shotcrete walls to the basement [and] precast panels.
“We had steel webbed trusses spanning the basketball courts and they were so large they had to be fabricated in two sections and lifted up in two pieces with two cranes and joined together mid span.”
The project took the team two years to complete and involved a high level of finishes, blending in with the school’s modern facilities.
Mr Lyons said his team was thrilled to receive the award, and it was a great honour.
“It’s great recognition for the fantastic work that the Lyons Constructions team does.
“We’ve got a good relationship with the architect, Wardle Architects, for the project and Geelong College as the client. We got along really well and worked together to have a fantastic result that we can all be proud of.”
Lyons Constructions also received the Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings award for projects between $3-$6 million for its Harwood Andrews office fit-out.

The title for the 2025 MBV Regional Residential Builder of the Year – Western was awarded to Geelong’s Victorian Built for its Newtown renovation.
The aim for this particular build was to preserve and restore the home’s historical charm, with the modern, open-plan extension featuring custom-designed curved walls, archways, unique doorways and bespoke cornices securing it the win.
MBV chief executive officer Michaela Lihou said the success of the major winners demonstrates the strength and commitment to excellence of Victoria’s regional building industry.
“There are some stunning projects being delivered right across regional Victoria, and as we’ve witnessed in these Western region awards, yet again, our industry continues to rise to the challenges it encounters and raise the bar even higher with the results it is delivering.

“Our warmest congratulations to all our winners and finalists, especially to the teams from Victorian Built and Lyons Constructions.”
The two western winners will meet with other regional winners later this year, where they will battle it out for the state honours.
